Vaccine-Preventable Diseases and the Vaccines That Prevent Them

A complete guide to the diseases vaccines protect against and the immunizations available at MediOAK Pharmacy in Sugar Land, Texas.

Why Vaccines Matter More Than Ever

Vaccines are one of the greatest public health achievements in modern history. Many diseases that once killed or disabled millions of people every year are now largely preventable thanks to immunization. Yet as vaccination rates decline in some communities, diseases that were nearly eliminated are making a comeback.

At MediOAK Pharmacy, we believe that informed patients make better health decisions. This guide walks you through the most common vaccine-preventable diseases and exactly which vaccines protect against them.

Influenza (Flu)

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and can lead to hospitalization or even death, particularly in young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Available Vaccines

  • Annual seasonal flu shot (recommended for everyone 6 months and older)
  • High-dose flu vaccine (recommended for adults 65 and older)

Pneumococcal Disease (Pneumonia)

Pneumococcal disease is caused by bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. It can lead to pneumonia, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. Older adults and young children are most at risk, but anyone with a weakened immune system or chronic illness can be vulnerable.

Available Vaccines

  • PCV13 (Prevnar 13) for infants, young children, and adults 65 and older
  • PPSV23 (Pneumovax) for adults 65 and older and certain high-risk groups

Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It results in a painful rash and can lead to long-lasting nerve pain known as postherpetic neuralgia. Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles later in life.

Available Vaccines

  • Shingrix (recombinant shingles vaccine) β€” recommended for adults 50 and older, given in two doses

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)

Measles, mumps, and rubella are viral infections that can cause serious complications including encephalitis, deafness, and birth defects. Although they were once common childhood illnesses, they are now largely preventable through vaccination.

Available Vaccines

  • MMR vaccine β€” typically given to children at 12 to 15 months and again at 4 to 6 years
  • Available for adults who lack evidence of immunity

Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. It can become chronic and lead to liver failure, liver cancer, or cirrhosis. The virus is spread through contact with infectious body fluids, blood, or from mother to child during birth.

Available Vaccines

  • Hepatitis B vaccine series β€” three doses given over six months
  • Available for all age groups, including adults who were not vaccinated as children

Varicella (Chickenpox)

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. While it is often considered a mild illness in children, it can be severe in adults and in people with weakened immune systems, causing pneumonia and other serious complications.

Available Vaccines

  • Varicella vaccine β€” two doses recommended for children and susceptible adults

Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (TDAP)

Tetanus (lockjaw), diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) are serious bacterial infections. Pertussis in particular can be life-threatening for newborns. Adults should receive a TDAP booster to help protect themselves and vulnerable infants they come into contact with.

Available Vaccines

  • TDAP booster β€” recommended every 10 years for adults
  • Recommended during each pregnancy to protect newborns
